Slow down when dealing with angry clients in counselling

If you are feeling angry then slow down. If you are feeling anxious then slow down. If you are dealing with an angry client then slow down. These might sound like a mantra but the importance of slowing down when angry cannot be overstated.

In counselling and psychotherapy, asking an angry person to start describing what is happening to them and what they are feeling in their bodies can work magic. An angry client in the therapeutic relationship can be helped to slow down by getting in touch with body work. Ask where the energy is located in the body. Bring the attention to somatic energy when the client might want to stay in their rationalised mind state. An angry client may not be open to visualisations and guided meditation but might be open to describing where in their body they are feeling the anger.
