Given the recent 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech I began to wonder whether we all should have a dream. That made me think about what my dream is. Do I have a personal dream to realise my own potential or am I dreaming of a better future for wider society?
Having a personal dream can be vital when setting personal goals. Having a destination in mind can help the journey and may even provide a map. A good way to help with goal setting is to use the GROW Model (Goals, reality, options (or obstacles) as a journey planning exercise. Decide where you are going (which is the goal), and then establish where you currently are (your current reality). To utilise the GROW Model then to explore various routes (the options) to your destination. Finally, establishing the will, you ensure that you’re committed to making the journey, and are prepared for the obstacles that you could meet on the way.
Having a dream in mind for a better world can also help energise your contributions to civic society or in activism.
So, what is your dream?
