The Maytree is a sanctuary for the suicidal, based in Finsbury Park, and is run by a small staff team and a team of around 100 volunteers, mostly psychotherapists in training. The Refugee and Support Service of Central and North London NHS Trust offers brief counselling and psychotherapy for refugees and asylum seekers with mental health problems living within the London Boroughs of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.
Referrals are accepted from both Primary Care and Secondary Care Services ie GPs, Community Mental Health Teams and other agencies working with refugees and asylum seekers in the catchment areas. Criteria for referrals as follows:
Aged 16 and over
Living within the boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea or Westminster
Requiring emotional support (counselling or psychotherapy)
Suffering from Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Did you know that the Freud Museum is based in North London? It is located at 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead. The building had been home to Sigmund Freud and his family after they they had escaped the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. The house remained the family home until Anna Freud, his youngest daughter, died in 1982. The cororstone of the museum is Freud’s study, as it preserved exactly as it was when he once practiced.
